Locality and globality in the world of names

The central topic of the congress is the linguistic position that proper names occupy in our present globalized world. Proper names as linguistic universals are an ancient linguistic category as old as language itself. They were probably created by the communicational situation in which, relying on linguistic signs fostering distinction, humans wanted to mark the things that were most important in their immediate environment. In fact, this ancient function is the most important reason for the existence and use of proper names even today. Nevertheless, at the same time, proper names may be the most characteristic linguistic representations of the global linguistic situation that has evolved up to our times. Communication in our times does not only make the ever more intensive use of proper names inevitable, but it also endows these with ever newer functions, continuously creating new types and sorts of names.

The wide-ranging central topic of the congress offers a number of possible approaches for speakers. Different questions of onomastic theory will come to the foreground, such as the situation of the variable relationships between particular types of names or their continuous interactions and changes. The presentation of the systematic character of names and their manifestation in different linguistic environments calls both for the study of phenomena and the accurate, thorough analysis of particular names. Besides the (historic and descriptive) aspects traditionally found in linguistics, new aspects may also be raised that have come to the fore over recent decades: e.g. socio- and psycho-onomastic or even cognitive frame sets; and, besides all these, even related disciplines, such as language policies or different approaches of applied science, may come to contribute to our knowledge concerning proper names.

The deadline for paper proposals is 31st October 2016. The programme will be finalised in December 2016.

Lokalisierung und Globalisierung in der Welt der Namen

Das zentrales Thema des Kongresses bildet die sprachliche Position, welche die Eigennamen in der heutigen globalisierten Welt einnehmen. Eigennamen sind als sprachliche Universalien eine Urkategorie, die ebenso alt ist wie die Sprache selbst. Ihr Entstehen war durch Kommunikationssituationen bedingt, in denen der Mensch mit individuellen sprachlichen Zeichen in seiner Umwelt die wichtigsten Dinge, aber auch Menschen und Lebewesen bezeichnen wollte. Diese Urfunktion ist auch heute noch die wichtigste Quelle für die Existenz und die Verwendung von Eigennamen. Damit sind Eigennamen die typischsten sprachlichen Vertreter der bis in die Gegenwart reichenden globalen sprachlichen Situation. Für die Kommunikation unserer Tage ist der immer häufigere Gebrauch von Eigennamen nicht nur unentbehrlich, zusätzlich werden auf sie laufend neue Funktionen übertragen, wodurch immer neue Namenarten und -typen entstehen

Das einen breiten Bogen überspannende zentrale Thema des Kongresses bietet viele Anknüpfungsmöglichkeiten für die Vortragenden. Im Vordergrund stehen verschiedene Fragen der Namentheorie, das Verhältnis der Namenarten und ihre laufenden Wechselbeziehungen und Transformationen. Die Darstellungen der Namenssystematik und deren Wiedergabe in einzelnen Sprachelementen können sowohl durch eine phänomenologische Untersuchung wie auch durch die gründliche Analyse einzelner Namen erfolgen. Neben den traditionellen sprachwissenschaftlichen (historischen und deskriptiven) Aspekten können auch erfolgreiche Standpunkte der letzten Jahrzehnte erscheinen. Ebenso können die sozio und psychoonomastischen oder die kognitiven Bedingungen und neben diesen Soziologie, Sprachpolitik und die Beziehungen zu den angewandten Wissenschaften die Kenntnisse über die Eigennamen erweitern.

Der Termin für die Abgabe der Vorschläge ist der 31. Oktober 2016. Das Programm wird im Dezember 2016 zusammengestellt.

Localité et globalité dans l’univers des noms

Le thème central du congrès porte sur la situation linguistique des noms propres dans notre monde global actuel. Le nom propre comme universel linguistique est une catégorie linguistique ancestrale aussi ancienne que la langue. Il est le fruit des situations de communication dans lesquelles l’homme a voulu, par des signes linguistiques particuliers, désigner des choses, des personnes ou des organismes importants dans son environnement immédiat. Cette fonction ancienne constitue, encore aujourd’hui, la plus importante source de l’existence et de l’usage des noms propres. Ces noms sont en cela les représentants linguistiques les plus caractéristiques de la situation linguistique globale qui s’est développée jusqu’à présent. Non seulement la communication de nos jours ne peut se passer de l’usage accru des noms propres, mais elle leur transfère continuellement de nouvelles fonctions, créant ainsi de nouveaux genres et types de noms.

Le thème central du congrès couvre un large spectre et permet aux conférenciers d’appliquer des approches très diverses. En priorité les différentes questions de la théorie onomastique, les rapports entre les catégories de noms, ainsi que leurs interrelations et interactions actuelles. Les représentations de la systématique des noms et de leur reproduction en éléments linguistiques particuliers peuvent susciter autant des études de phénomènes qu’une analyse approfondie de certains noms. Outre les aspects (historiques et descriptifs) traditionnellement basés sur la linguistique, des points de vue émergés ces dernières années peuvent également être présentés. De même, les conditions socio- ou pyscho-onomastiques et cognitives peuvent élargir les connaissances sur les noms propres, à côté de celles de la sociologie, de la politique linguistique et des relations avec les sciences appliquées.

Le délai pour envoyer les résumés est le 31 octobre 2016. Le programme sera finalisé en décembre 2016.
